Magnesium plays a role in over 300 biochemical functions throughout the body and unfortunately, the hospitality lifestyle does not lend itself to maintaining adequate levels of this important nutrient.
Stress, drinking, smoking and poor diet all contribute to lower than ideal levels of magnesium in the body.
Our body will use magnesium in the production of serotonin and as such studies show low magnesium concentrations to be associated with a higher risk of depression. Deprivation of magnesium can also induce oxidative stress, which can lead to further risk and the death of important cells in the brain.
Moderate changes in bodily magnesium levels are able to significantly affect the assembly and functionality of the neuronal networks involved in cognition.

B vitamins need to be obtained through a healthy balanced diet and all play essential roles in internal cellular functioning, particularly related to neurotransmitter function within the brain. Unfortunately, lifestyle factors increase depletion in the body, especially regular alcohol consumption.
Think of the B Vitamins as a team, working together for good brain health.
For example, a study has shown that B3, B6 and B9 all play different roles within the body for efficient neurotransmitter synthesis. but a deficiency in B12 will result in a functional B9 deficiency because it cannot be processed properly – hindering the work of the rest of the team.
B1 and B5 are essential within the body when maintaining healthy levels of acetylcholine.
The master detoxer
Due to regulations, we’re not actually allowed to say NAC has any health benefits.
We can though say what it is used for – the NHS uses N-acetyl Cysteine for paracetamol overdoses, the result of this overdose is a depletion of one of our body’s most potent antioxidants – glutathione. NAC is used here to help the body replenish glutathione.
Low nutrient diets, sugar, sleep levels and alcohol consumption all contribute to lowering levels of bodily glutathione.
Glutathione is our most powerful internal front line defence against free radicals and oxidative stress which can result in depressive symptoms.
Studies show Glutathione can also reduce levels of acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of alcohol.

Within the body, Tyrosine is essential to the production of dopamine and catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) and its levels are influenced by diet, nutritional intake and levels of cytokine interference.
Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that controls pleasure, reward and motivation and also plays a large role in physically moving our body – it essentially moves us physically and mentally towards goals that we either find rewarding or key to our survival. The catecholamines are very much related and control our ‘fight or flight’ responses – how we react in times of stress.
The U.S Marines have been testing L-Tyrosine for its potential cognitive-enhancing capabilities under times of stress, another similar study using L-Tyrosine in environments over 90 decibels.
An unrelated study appears to support these two hypotheses unintentionally, with its initial finding that simply supplementing Tyrosine has little effect on mood. BUT should the body be placed under stress, and the catecholamine system be active, Dopamine synthesis is then positively affected.

Alpha GPC is essentially a highly efficient source of choline, the precursor for our most abundant yet lesser well-known neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a master-regulator of the other neurotransmitters, it also plays a major role in memory, attention and overall cognitive function.
While acetylcholine can partially be produced within our bodies, the majority still does come from dietary choline intake. The process in the production of acetylcholine does though require bodily reserves of B1 and B5, and therefore poor diet is shown to limit acetylcholine levels within the body.

Bacopa Monnieri has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine and is thought to reduce anxiety and improve cognitive function – unfortunately, while research into this is promising, it is still ongoing.
It does though contain a high amount of naturally occurring free radical hunting antioxidants while also improving blood flow to the brain – a theorised reason behind the potential cognitive benefits.
